Rudraksha beads are used for japa, which is the repetition of a mantra while meditating.

What is a mantra? A mantra is the basis of all religious practices, scriptures, and prayers. By repeat a mantra repeatedly to help you become more aware and alter the subconscious impulses and habits. When deep in meditation and mantras, the state of your body will be energized with higher vibration.

The word, rudraksha, is derived from the Sanskrit roots rudra, which is another name for the Hindu god, Shiva. Aksha means "eyes." Rudraksha can be translated to mean "Rudra's teardrops." Legend says that Shiva shed a tear when he opened his eyes after a long meditation and this tear evolved into a rudaksha tree. By wearing rudraksha beads provides protection of Shiva and works as a shield against negative energies.
